Missed Shot

8 November 2026 · Michael Jordan · LinkedIn

BeProlific motivational quote graphic by Dean J Moon with a low-poly illustration of Michael Jordan in a Chicago Bulls 45 jersey and the words Why would I think about missing a shot I have not taken yet, about resilience.

Summary

A quote graphic that sat in Canva from August 2023 until ChatGPT re-rendered it in November 2026. The post opens on Michael Jordan's 7-28 return in March 1995, shows his shot volume holding while his accuracy fell, then the work after Orlando knocked the Bulls out: Tim Grover the next day and 14-hour days around Space Jam. The turn is aimed at people who complain about the algorithm, leads and AI slop instead of posting. Dean dictated, Claude researched and drafted; five drafts were rejected as robotic, which led to a rewrite of the drafting method, and Dean rewrote the sixth himself in AuthoredUp before posting.

The post as published

19 March 1995.

Jordan returns to the court. In his first game he shoots 7-28.

Some say he's lost it.

The Comeback

Jordan had been away from the game for 17 months. A lot had changed.

His body was conditioned for baseball. The Bulls roster had changed.

Understandably, his performance had dropped. But what didn't stop was his will to win. Whilst his initial performance was sub-par, it would only be a matter of time before he would recondition himself to his former self (or better).

When you look at the stats, his output was almost identical but the outcome wasn't.

In order to win, you've got to go through the repetitions of failure to success.

The Work

After the Orlando Magic vanquished the Bulls in the play-offs, Jordan simply told his conditioning coach Tim Grover he'd see him tomorrow.

During the summer Jordan had commitments to film 'Space Jam' and Warner Brothers set up a personal gym and full size basketball court on set. After shooting during the day, Jordan would invite the NBA's elite for pick-up games at night.

This meant Jordan had 14 hour days between shooting a movie, working out and playing basketball.

What's the point?

"Why would I think about missing a shot I haven't taken yet?"

(Jordan, as Mark Vancil recalls it in The Last Dance)

- People complain about AI slop. - People complain about the algorithm. - People complain about not getting leads. - People complain about how social is changing.

People like to complain.

ENOUGH!

When you complain about the environment and look for ideal conditions you are missing shots you haven't taken.

I have spoken to so many people over the years who 'want' to start posting and writing only to start once they get made redundant - too late.

I have spoken to people who complain about the algorithm and can't put a post together if their life depended on it.

Every day that passes and you miss a post... you miss an opportunity to grab someone's attention.

Worrying about the missed shot before you've even taken it just seems stupid.

You're better off posting something and getting one or zero impressions than not posting, because you're definitely going to be getting a 100% of nothing for doing nothing.

I'll see you tomorrow!

This original post was the idea came up in August 2023. In fact, I'm going to add the URL. The post name that I'd saved.

DRAFT 2023.08.19 | Michael Jordan | Missing A Shot

And the funny thing is, like, I just sat on it for ages because at the time I was using Leonardo AI, and one of the biggest problems that I had was trying to re-emulate images. From photos that I'd seen.

And I know that it's a little bit funny to sort of do that, but what's happened is I get all of these ideas for particular posts, and sometimes they don't fall in line with what my themes are or the narrative I'm trying to drive.

But I love this quote, and I loved the typical Jordan pose where he's got his hands on his legs, and he's obviously watching the start of the play about to start, and so I started playing with this, and I wanted it to be more like a picture graphic type sort of style. But I didn't know how to put it together.

So I sat on it, and then I put some other content up, and it's just been sitting in my Canva for almost 3 years. The irony is that ChatGPT has come such a long way with images that you can just put things in and ask for it to re-render in a particular style. And so I did that. But at the same time, I wanted to put more into it.

And I wanted to capture the essence of what was the quote really about. And the idea came to me more about what was Jordan's output pre-retirement and then obviously after he came back. Because he came back just before the postseason started, and his performance was lackluster. He did have obviously the double nickel game .

But the thing that really stood out to me was the fact that he was just persistent with his output. And I think that makes me think, you can't get better by just sitting and trying to be perfect. And I watch all this stuff on YouTube and read all sorts of things, and people talk about putting all this quality in.

And the one thing that comes back to me is the book about fear and art. Your art and fear, I can't remember what it's called. And the concept of, the parable of the clay pots, which is really from that book, and it's about taking photos. And so when you do the work and you do the practice and you do the training, your baseline skills are going to increase.

And that baseline creates a level of competence. And that competence creates a level of confidence. And that confidence then creates a level of expertise that you can execute. More so than somebody that's just trying to be perfect on a small number of occasions. And so that's what this was really about. And so my skills have come a long way.

But even now, I'm iterating on code and using GitHub and posting content onto the cell, onto my website. And so this is vastly different from when I was like doing everything manually on Canva.

But had I not been doing that manually, then I wouldn't have all of these ideas and this concept of provenance or lineage behind the content, which is what I'm doing right now with the dictation. And so why would I think about missing a shot that I haven't even taken? I'm posting this on a Sunday at 3 p.m.-ish. November 2026.

Will I get the impressions and the count that I expected when I wrote my first Jordan post back in 2023, I think it was? No, I'm not. Do I care? No. I'm just getting the reps in.

So basically, this post is about Michael Jordan's output when he returned from his first retirement after he went to baseball for 18 months. And it compares his output from just before his retirement when he won his last championship with the Chicago Bulls against the Phoenix Suns.

And the whole concept here is that, you know, the quote is, you know, they're words from a book that were quoted from The Last Dance, where, you know, Michael says, you know, why would I be worried about, you know, missed shots that I haven't taken?

And so the idea is that, like, he came back and he was, he'd obviously lacked the conditioning because his body was now conditioned to baseball, and he hadn't had the conditioning or the training. The team had changed, and yet his performance had dropped. But that didn't stop him from, you know, taking, you know, roughly a similar amount of shots.

And whilst his performance had dropped, it's not through lack of, you know, he wasn't scared of failing. In fact, it was the fact that he had this deep desire to win. And in order to win, you've got to go through the repetitions of failure to improve.

And then obviously after this, break, after they got knocked out by the Orlando Magic, they, you know, he said to Tim Grover, "I'll see you tomorrow," and starts working out whilst he's, you know, filming Space Jam, and, you know, Warner Brothers set up, you know, the Jordan Dome, and so he's got, you know, a weight room, he's got a full gym, and he's got a basketball court, and he's just got pickup games going on and on over the break period, and he's just working.

And it's this mentality of just putting in the work and not worrying about, you know, will that shot go in or not. It's about just knowing that when you do the work, that you have to trust the process, and the work is, you know, without the work, you're not going to get the outcome.

And then, so when I think this about, you know, content and specifically like business development and outreach, I think about it from the fact of, you know, people complain about the algorithm. People complain about not getting, you know, leads. People complain that how, you know, social is changing.

People complain about, you know, AI, you know, changing things and AI slop and all of this sort of change. But then if you kind of think about it, it's like the world that Michael Jordan came back into had changed. His team had changed. You know, Horace Grant had left. You know, they lost a key interior defender and rebounder.

You know, it was him, Horace, and Scotty that, you know, were the triangle offense. There were new people on the team, Tony Kukoc, Luke Longley, you know, Steve Kerr. You know, the team had changed, the game had changed, you know.

When you complain about the environment outside and you're not putting in the work, you're not, and you're worried about the shots that you're going to miss, you're missing opportunities regardless. And I think this is what this post really is for me.

This image, ironically, has been sitting, not this particular image, but the initial graphic idea, concepts, has been sitting in my Notion board for almost, I think, 2 years. I'll put a screenshot into when I actually created the image on Canva.

And it's funny, it's like, I was, you know, at the time I was worried that, you know, would this be well received or not, but, you know, I've come and gone about content creation, but the funny thing is content for me is the tool and the proxy to understand the algorithm. It's the tool to understand how to use AI.

It's the tool, I don't even know if the tool is the right word, but it is the mechanism in which it allows me to fuse what's happening with technology. So how, for example, this image was created using ChatGPT.

It wasn't used using my previous methods, which would have been prompting into Leonardo AI, which incidentally I've just cancelled my subscription to because I'm not using it as much, and it's, I just don't see the value in it anymore.

And so it's just understanding that you miss 100% of the shots by not taking the shots, and, you know, worrying about the missed shot before you've even taken it just seems stupid.

You're better off posting something and getting, like, you know, one impression or zero impressions than not posting, because you're 100% going to get zero impressions from not posting. And so when you look at the stats for Michael in the image, and then you see what happened the following year, like, they came back and they won another three in a row.

So this is a challenge to all those people that are worried about, you know, if you never even got on the content bandwagon when it all started to happen around, you know, late 2022 to now, like, what have you missed?

You have missed this whole opportunity to learn how to use generative AI, whether it be diffusion models or LLMs, and understand how these tools actually work. Understand how algorithms work. Understand how social works. Social is no longer just, you know, posting and ghosting and getting people to follow. It's actually a channel to connect with people.

And if you've missed that because you're sitting on the sidelines, you know, commenting on how shit things are, like, pull your head out and get in the game.

    What's the point?

People complain about the algorithm. People complain about not getting leads. People complain about how social is changing. People complain about AI slop.

The world Jordan came back into had changed too.

Complain about the environment, skip the work, worry about the shots you're going to miss... you're missing opportunities regardless.

This graphic sat in my Notion board for almost two years. I worried whether it would be well received. This version was created using ChatGPT, and I've just cancelled Leonardo AI.

Content is how I understand the algorithm. It's how I understand AI.

Post something and get one impression, or zero.

Don't post and you're 100% going to get zero.

If you never got on the content bandwagon from late 2022, what have you missed?

How generative AI works, diffusion models and LLMs. How algorithms work. How social works.

Social is no longer posting and ghosting. It's a channel to connect with people.

Michael Jordan plays his first game back after 17 months of baseball.

    The Comeback

Jordan came back and he lacked the conditioning. His body was conditioned to baseball, and he hadn't had the training.

The team had changed too. Horace Grant had left, so they'd lost a key interior defender and rebounder. Toni Kukoč, Luc Longley and Steve Kerr were new.

But that didn't stop him taking roughly the same amount of shots... 23.8 a game, against 25.7 the season before he retired.

    (Basketball Reference)

He wasn't scared of failing. He had this deep desire to win, and to win you've got to go through the repetitions of failure to improve.

    The Work

After the Orlando Magic relinquished the bulls in the play-offs. Jordan simply said to his conditioning coach Tim Grover - "See you tomorrow".

During the summer Jordan had commitments to film 'Space Jam' and Warner Brothers set up a personal gym and full size basketball court on set. After shooting in the morning, Jordan would invite the NBA's elite for pick-up games.

This meant Jordan had 16 hour days between shooting a movie, working out and playing basketball.
